Katie Pettit
AmeriCorps Youth in Action Volunteer, Direct Service Center Assistant
College: Northern Arizona University
Major: Sociology

Katie Pettit is currently a junior at Northern Arizona University studying sociology. Katie has changed her major several times while searching for her passion. Katie hopes to attain a masters degree in art therapy at Naropa University in Colorado and counsel individuals who have experienced trauma through art. "I've tried so many different programs at NAU in hopes to find the right one. I started in Elementary Education, moved to Geology and Math, then tried Art, Women's and Gender Studies, and finally ended up in Sociology. I understand how it feels to be searching while in school, and I hope to help fellow students find their path as well." What is your biggest hope for Northern Arizona youth?
Obtaining an education is the way that each one of us can make a small difference in this world. Our global society requires it of us, we must take initiative to grow new ideas, innovation and strategies to make our world what we want it to be. I choose to help today's youth, through Educational Talent Search and the NACRC because each student in Northern Arizona deserves to go to college and I will do what I can to help them achieve that goal. My biggest hope for Northern Arizona youth is that they take the risk to go to the college, vocational school, or university that they really want to attend.

College: Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Saint Mary's College in San Francisco's Bay Area; Master's in Counseling from Northern Arizona University, current PhD student at NAU

Most Memorable College Moment?
I think my most memorable college experience was walking across the stage to receive my Bachelor's Degree. It is such an amazing feeling of accomplishment-- one that you can only do by yourself/ for yourself and is a gift that can never be taken away

Why are you an advisor for the NACRC?
I am a firm believer in higher education. I enjoy working with adult learners because it is important to realize it is never too late to earn a degree or further your education. I can lead by example and by experience, as I have a full time job and a family, and I focus on one class at a time, taking it slow but constantly moving forward with my education.
Advising Special Interests: Adult Learners

Most Memorable College Moment:
Graduation day! 21 years after earning my B.S. degree I successfully earned my Masters degree. Memorable and meaningful because I always knew I wanted to earn my Masters degree, it was a personal goal I knew I needed to achieve in my lifetime. So I set my mind to it and I did it! Yes, there were many challenges; personal and health issues, being the sole financial support for my family, working fulltime, being a fulltime parent, fulltime student and yes, it took longer than most, but I didn't stop, I kept going and successfully earned my graduate degree!

Advisor Special Interests:
The program I work with is the Educational Opportunity Centers so I am especially interested in working with adult learners interested in returning to higher education or complete their GED.
Why do you enjoy being an advisor and working with 1st-generation, low-income, and minority student so much? I enjoy being an advisor because I am very passionate about helping others improve their lives and one of the best way is through education. I enjoy helping, encouraging and motivating others to believe in themselves and achieve their education for a better life. A better life for themselves and their children, also for them to serve as a role-model and inspiration to others - that's what it's all about!
